Managing Pre‑orders
on Rapid Fulfillment
Rapid Fulfillment helps ecommerce brands store inventory, process orders and ship to their customers, with fulfillment services and connected customer support. It’s a full-service 3PL rather than a shipping tool: warehousing, inventory management, pick and pack, shipping, returns processing and a Shopify order integration. Rapid supports pre-order fulfillment, and how mixed and held orders are processed is set by each client’s agreed fulfillment instructions, so agree your pre-order workflow with their team during onboarding.

This guide will break down how Rapid Fulfillment handles key pre-order functions like negative stock, Shopify’s “On Hold” status, and fulfilment workflows, so you’ll know what to expect, where it excels, and any workarounds you may need.
How 3PLs and pre-orders work together in the modern ecommerce stack
Third-Party Logistics (3PL) providers specialize in managing your fulfillment from start to finish. They:
- Receive and store products in their warehouses
- Pick and pack orders
- Ship to customers using their own software that syncs with your ecommerce platform
Below is a typical flow. Click through to see how Shopify, the 3PL and pre-order application interact.

Key Considerations for Managing Pre‑orders on Rapid Fulfillment
In the diagram above you may have noticed the word “should” being used a couple of times… That’s because not all 3PLs fully support Shopify’s pre-order features out of the box. Some may lack support for negative inventory counts or fail to respect Shopify’s “On Hold” order status, requiring workarounds or additional configuration.
If your store uses an ERP, it often instructs the 3PL on which orders to fulfill, meaning you might not need all of the 3PL’s features we’re about to go through.
Read on to see how Rapid Fulfillment interacts with Shopify pre-orders and what you might need to adjust.
Syncing Shopify Products and Inventory
During onboarding Rapid maps your Shopify store’s SKUs, variants, bundle components and fulfillment locations so warehouse stock lines up with your catalog.
• SKU and variant mapping set up at onboarding
• Bundle components mapped to their individual SKUs
• Inventory managed in Rapid’s own inventory system

Yes. Rapid connects to Shopify so orders released for fulfillment move through picking, packing and shipping, and shipment tracking returns to the order workflow.
• Shopify orders imported for fulfillment
• Tracking returned to the order once shipped
Custom Workflows with Shopify Tags and Line-item Properties
Workflows are scoped with Rapid’s team per client rather than configured by the merchant. Routing by Shopify order tags or line-item properties (like PreProduct’s _preorder property) isn’t confirmed, so raise it when scoping your setup.
Workflows can also key off a pre-order line-item property: PreProduct marks every pre-order line with a hidden, non-renamable _preorder: true property from the moment the order is created. It’s safe to build rules on, even for orders/create webhooks that arrive before PreProduct’s “pre-order” order tag is applied. More on the _preorder property here.
Respecting Shopify’s “On Hold” Status
Rapid agrees with each client how payment status, holds and address issues affect processing, and shipping proceeds after a hold is released according to those instructions. Automatic handling of Shopify’s “on hold” fulfillment status and syncing of hold releases isn’t confirmed, so check with Rapid how they’ll recognise PreProduct’s held pre-orders before launch.
• Hold rules agreed per client
• Automatic Shopify “on hold” handling not confirmed
Pre-Order-Specific Features
Rapid supports pre-order fulfillment as a service, run to your agreed instructions rather than through a dedicated pre-order module. Pair it with PreProduct in Shopify to take the pre-orders, then agree with Rapid:
1. Whether mixed orders ship ready items first or wait
2. How held pre-orders are identified and released
3. What happens when stock lands
Partial Order fulfillment
Rapid handles mixed orders (in-stock and pre-order items together) per client. Whether the ready items ship first or the whole order waits is set by your agreed fulfillment instructions, along with how split shipments and exceptions are handled.
• Ship-ready-first or wait-for-all: your choice, agreed with Rapid
• Split shipment handling defined at onboarding
Re-syncs orders from platform
Rapid defines with each client what can be changed before an order enters processing, so agree how late edits to a pre-order are handled.
