BigCommerce Pre-orders FAQ

BigCommerce has native pre-order functionality for charge-upfront pre-orders and cart button text updates. For more sophisticated functionality, a third-party tool is needed.

Can I offer BigCommerce pre-orders?

BigCommerce has a “track inventory” setting at the product level which will allow any product through checkout. However, if you need to track inventory and take sales for 0-stock SKUs, you’ll need to use a third-party tool like PreProduct that holds the orders elsewhere.

How do I sell products that have an inventory of 0 in BigCommerce?

Yes, with PreProduct you can. Orders will live in PreProduct until you’re ready for them to flow into BigCommerce. This can then be triggered when stock arrives.

Can I collect payment only when the item is in stock?

This may vary depending on your theme or setup (headless etc), but generally ticking the “This product is coming soon but I want to take pre-orders” checkbox in the “Purchasability” product admin will change your button text to say “pre-order”.

Please note, PreProduct doesn’t need the above custom product setting toggled. Instead, it will generate it’s own pre-order button, or alternatively hijack your add-to-cart button and use it for pre-orders when appropriate.

How to set up a pre-order Button on BigCommerce?

Allowing native pre-orders on BigCommerce can be achieved by selecting the “This product is coming soon but I want to take pre-orders” checkbox in the “Purchasability” section. Please note, this isn’t how the process for pre-orders works when using PreProduct.

PreProduct doesn’t push orders in to your BigCommerce inventory settings until you release or charge pre-orders. Meaning when a customer pre-orders an item, our system holds the product until you’re ready for fulfillment i.e stock levels will not decrement straight away when sales occur. Then when you’re ready to fulfil/charge pre-orders, you can release the orders into BigCommerce so everything can sync up and be fulfilled.

PreProduct also offers optional automations that watch your inventory levels, ensuring your storefront’s pre-order listings alway reflect current stock.

How does inventory management work with PreProduct on BigCommerce?

Communication is key. With PreProduct, you can send out update emails to inform customers of any changes. They can also access their dedicated pre-order portal anytime to check for real-time information and confirm product availability dates.

What happens if there’s a change in the expected release date of a pre-ordered item?

PreProduct integrates smoothly with product settings in BigCommerce, ensuring that your store theme/website can communicate pre-orders effectively. Whether it’s a on the product level or cart/checkout. It’s important to give a organized, clear, and efficient pre-order experience to consumers.

How does PreProduct handle pre-orders at the product level in my BigCommerce store?

PreProduct is designed to work seamlessly with your BigCommerce platform without needing any additional Big Commerce app installations. However, you will need an account with a supporting payment provider (Feel free to send us an email for the current options).

Do I need any other tools or plugins installed for this functionality?

Yes! With PreProduct, you can manage bulk listings effectively, whether it’s product releases or out-of-stock items. You can either use our bulk lister or Listing Manager automation to create the listings, then use PreProduct’s templates feature to update and sync groups of listings.

Can I bulk list pre-orders for Bigcommerce?

As described above, native BigCommerce pre-orders always charge straight away.

However, PreProduct offers the option to list other kinds of deferred-charge pre-orders where you can Charge later or split payments. When you charge is up to you and can be manually or automatically triggered.

Do pre-orders take money immediately?

Yes, our BigCommerce pre order system lets you take pre-orders without a fixed ship date. You can notify your customers before they pay/mid-campaign when you have a definite shipping date.

It’s worth being transparent before customers purchase in your pre-sale, making sure to customize front-end wording via the app, so that customers note the complete sales conditions.

Can I still offer a pre-order if I’m not sure when my product will ship?

The pre order campaign starts when you list an out-of-stock or upcoming product for pre-order. It goes through the phases of collecting pre-orders, updating customers via an email campaign or customer portal, and finally charging and releasing fulfilment (when the customers pay the business) once the inventory is available.

What is the pre-order campaign life cycle?

Yes, as it’s ‘locked in’ to the individual order, meaning previous order prices will be respected whilst future orders will pay according to the new discount.

Can I change my discount?

Absolutely. Should any changes arise in your supply chain, you can update the estimated shipping statement in PreProduct (other apps usually support this too). It’s then up to you whether you’d like to communicate these changes via an email update or just rely on the customer portal being updated.

Changes to pre-order shipping statements are quite common. You can start pre-order campaigns earlier and capture more sales, we would just recommend using charge-later or partial pay pre-orders if you think the shipping times could blow out. (as customers could be less forgiving if they pay the full amount upfront)

Can I change my shipping date?

Yes, by default PreProduct will redirect to a ‘pre-order only’ checkout session, whilst keeping any existing ‘buy-now’ cart items in tact in another tab.

Can I stop mixed orders of pre-order and buy-now items?
