Ship mixed pre-order and in-stock orders together, or flag them for a split

Download Works without PreProduct

When one order has a pre-order item and an in-stock item, many 3PLs and ERPs either hold the whole order or need someone to split it by hand. This flow spots mixed orders as they come in, tags them, and either holds them to ship together or flags them for your team to split.

PreProduct already keeps most pre-orders out of mixed carts with isolated carts. This flow covers the gap: orders that still arrive mixed.

THE FLOW, STEP BY STEP

How it works

What you’ll see in Shopify Flow after importing. Every step can be edited.

  1. TRIGGER 01

    Order created

Runs on every new order, from any sales channel.

  2. CHECK 02

    Any pre-order items?

Looks for PreProduct’s _preorder line-item property or a selling plan. No pre-order items: stop.

  3. CONDITION 03

    Mixed with in-stock items?

Checks whether the same order also has items that are ready to ship now.

  4. ACTIONS 04

Tag it, then hold or flag

Adds a mixed-preorder tag, then holds fulfilment so everything ships together.

REQUIREMENTS

What it needs

PreProduct isn’t required

No PreProduct triggers or actions. It reads PreProduct’s _preorder line-item property, or a selling plan, to spot pre-order items. Not using PreProduct? Swap the check in step 2 for your own line-item property.

Shopify Flow

Native Flow: it uses only Shopify Flow’s own triggers and actions, on any plan with Flow.

Other apps: your 3PL or ERP (optional)

The mixed-preorder tag is there for whichever 3PL or ERP routes your orders. Without one, your team can act on the tag in Shopify.

What Flow can't do

Flow cannot split one order into two. This flow holds or flags the order; the split happens in your 3PL, ERP or Shopify admin.

WORKS WITH ShipStation Extensiv NetSuite Cin7 or any system that reads Shopify order tags

  • Hold or only tag Keep Hold fulfillment order to ship together, or remove it to only tag the order.

COMMON TWEAKS

Adapting it

  • Only flag, don’t hold

Remove the Hold fulfillment order action and keep the tag, so nothing is held and your team decides.

    Remove · Hold fulfillment order
  • Use your 3PL’s own tag

Rename mixed-preorder to the tag your 3PL or ERP already filters on, so it slots into the routing you have.

Action · Add order tag “your-tag”
  • Alert in Slack too

Add Flow’s Slack action after the tag to post mixed orders to an ops channel.

    Action · Send Slack message

ABOUT THIS TEMPLATE

FAQ

01 Does this work without PreProduct?

Yes. It only uses Shopify Flow’s own triggers and actions. It reads PreProduct’s _preorder property, or a selling plan, to spot pre-order items; if you don’t use PreProduct, swap that check for your own line-item property.

02 Will importing change my existing workflows?

No. Importing adds a new, separate workflow. Your existing workflows aren’t touched, and nothing runs until you turn it on.

03 Can Flow split the order for me?

No. Flow can’t split one order into two. This flow holds or flags the order; the split itself happens in your 3PL, ERP or Shopify admin.
