A sell-out shouldn’t stop sales, and nobody should have to watch stock levels to switch products over by hand. This template does it for you: the moment a variant runs out, Shopify Flow puts it on pre-order with PreProduct, and creates a pre-order listing if the product doesn’t have one yet.

How it works

What you’ll see in Shopify Flow after installing. Every step can be edited.

  1. TRIGGER 01

    Product variant out of stock

    Flow starts the moment any variant’s inventory reaches zero.

  2. CHECK 02

    Already on pre-order?

    If the variant is already on pre-order, the flow stops. Nothing changes.

  3. CONDITION 03

    Active pre-order listing?

    Flow checks whether the product already has an active PreProduct listing.

  4. ACTIONS 04

    Put on pre-order, or create a listing

    If yes: put the listing variant on pre-order. If no: create a listing for that variant.

The template installs and runs in Shopify Flow on your store. Its trigger, Product variant out of stock, is Shopify’s own.

COMMON TWEAKS

Adapting it

  • Only run it on some products

    Add a condition after the trigger: product tags include, for example, preorder-ok. Products without the tag sell out as normal.

  • Set the ship date and deposit

    Create the listing from a PreProduct listing template, so new listings get your usual ship date, deposit and messaging.

  • Switch it back off automatically

    Pair it with “Take off pre-order when back in stock” so the variant returns to normal selling when stock lands.

FAQ

01 Do I need PreProduct for this?

Yes. Shopify Flow has no pre-order action of its own. This template uses PreProduct’s actions to put the variant on pre-order or create a listing, so it won’t run without PreProduct installed.

02 Can I edit the template after installing it?

Yes. Once installed it’s a normal workflow in your Shopify Flow, so you can add conditions, change actions or turn it off at any time.

03 What happens when the product comes back in stock?

This template only switches pre-order on. Pair it with “Take off pre-order when back in stock” to switch it off again automatically.
