Managing Pre-orders
on Ryder

Ryder is a logistics and supply chain solutions provider that integrates with Shopify via its RyderShip™ platform, offering real-time, bidirectional syncing for products, orders, and inventory. It also supports flexible pre-order workflows, “on hold” statuses, partial shipments, and rules-based customization for fulfillment.

This guide will break down how Ryder handles key pre-order functions like negative stock, Shopify’s “On Hold” status, and fulfilment workflows—so you’ll know what to expect, where it excels, and any workarounds you may need.

How 3PLs and pre-orders work together in the modern ecommerce stack

Third-Party Logistics (3PL) providers specialize in managing your fulfillment from start to finish. They:

  • Receive and store products in their warehouses
  • Pick and pack orders
  • Ship to customers using their own software that syncs with your ecommerce platform

Below is a typical flow. Click through to see how Shopify, the 3PL and pre-order application interact.

Key Considerations for Managing Pre-orders
on Ryder

In the diagram above you may have noticed the word “should” being used a couple of times… That’s because not all 3PLs fully support Shopify’s pre-order features out of the box. Some may lack support for negative inventory counts or fail to respect Shopify’s “On Hold” order status, requiring workarounds or additional configuration.

If your store uses an ERP, it often instructs the 3PL on which orders to fulfill—meaning you might not need all of the 3PL’s features we’re about to go through.

Read on to see how Ryder interacts with Shopify pre-orders and what you might need to adjust.

Syncing Shopify Products and Inventory

Yes. RyderShip™ integrates with Shopify to synchronize product data (titles, SKUs, inventory levels) in real time, helping prevent overselling and ensuring accurate stock data.

Syncing Shopify Orders

Yes. RyderShip™ pulls Shopify order data (statuses, customer details, line items) in real time, then pushes fulfillment updates back. This bidirectional sync helps keep orders and shipping details consistent across platforms.

Custom Workflows with Shopify Tags and Metafields

RyderShip™ provides rules-based order flows for partial shipments, hold statuses, and “street dates.” These rules can automate tasks (e.g., holding back items until launch) and can be tailored to match specific operational needs.

Respecting Shopify’s “On Hold” Status

Yes. If Shopify marks an order as “on hold,” RyderShip™ respects this status and pauses fulfillment until the hold is released, ensuring that pre-orders or any delayed shipments aren’t processed prematurely.

Pre-Order-Specific Features

RyderShip™ offers a “pre-order” status which impacts how the order is treated and prioritised

Partial Order fulfillment

RyderShip™ supports partial fulfillment. Orders can be split so that available items ship now, while unready items remain on hold until they’re ready. This ensures customers receive items without delay.

Re-syncs orders from platform

Yes. RyderShip™ syncs product and order data in real time with Shopify. Updates to inventory or order status are automatically reflected in both systems—no manual refresh needed.
